Most common Voice search close out in 2019

Nine voice search stats to close out 2019

A look back at some of the year's key voice searches and virtual assistant metrics.

From smartphones to smart home appliances, artificial intelligence, voice and virtual assistants are very much at the center of a shift in the way we interact with digital devices. While voice has not yet lived up to its promise, it’s clear it will be an enduring feature of the digital user experience across an expanding array of connected devices.

Mobile = 59% of search

Way back in 2015, Google announced that mobile search had surpassed search query volumes on the desktop. But it never said anything more precise and hasn’t updated the figure. Hitwise, in 2016 and again in 2019, found that mobile search volumes in the aggregate were about 59% of the total, with some verticals considerably higher (e.g., food/restaurants 68%) and others lower (e.g., retail 47%).
This isn’t a voice stat, but it’s important because the bulk of voice-based queries and commands occur on mobile devices rather than the desktop.

The voice on the cusp of being the first choice for mobile search

According to early 2019 survey data (1,700 U.S. adults) from Perficient Digital, voice is now the number two choice for mobile search, after the mobile browser:
  1. Mobile browser
  2. Voice search
  3. Phone’s search box/window
  4. Search app
  5. Text a friend
However between 2018 to 2019, voice grew as a favored entry point for mobile search at the apparent expense of the browser. Thus it could overtake text input as the primary mobile search UI in 2020.

Nearly 50% using voice for web search

Adobe released survey data in July that found 48% of consumers are using voice for “general web searches.” This is not the debunked “50% of searches will be mobile in 2020,” data point incorrectly attributed to comScore.
The vast majority of respondents (85%) reported using voice to control their smartphones; 39% were using voice on smart speakers, which is a proxy figure for device ownership.
Here are the top use cases for voice usage, predominantly on smartphones:
  1. Directions while driving — 52%
  2. Making a phone call — 51%
  3. Sending a text — 50%
  4. Checking the weather — 49%
  5. Playing music — 49%

Directions a top voice use case

Consistent with the Adobe survey, an April Microsoft report found a more specific hierarchy of “search” use cases on smartphones and smart speakers. Again, however, this is a primarily smartphone-based list:
  1. Searching for a quick fact — 68 percent
  2. Asking for directions — 65 percent
  3. Searching for a business — 47 percent
  4. Researching a product or service — 44 percent
  5. Making a shopping list — 39 percent

Crossing the 100 million smart speaker threshold

During 2019 there were multiple reports and estimates that sought to quantify the overall number of smart speakers in the U.S. and global markets. In early 2019, Edison research projected that there were roughly 118 million smart speakers in U.S. homes. However, other analyst firms and surveys found different numbers, typically somewhat lower.
Because people often own more than one smart speaker, the number of actual individual owners of smart speakers is considerably lower than 100 million: 65 million or 58 million, depending on the survey.

Amazon dominating Google in smart speaker market

Amazon, with its low-priced and aggressively marketed Echo Dot, controls roughly 70% to 75% of the U.S. smart speaker market according to analyst reports. In Q3 2019, for example, Amazon shipped 3X as many smart speaker and smart display units as Google.
Analyst firm Canalys argues Amazon’s success is a byproduct of its market-leading direct channel and discounting. Google’s direct and channel sales have so far not been able to keep pace with Amazon’s efforts.

Virtual assistant usage: Siri and Google lead

In contrast to the smart speaker market share figures, virtual assistant usage is a different story. This is because most virtual assistant usage is on smartphones and Amazon doesn’t have one.
A Microsoft report (in April) found a different market share distribution, with the Google Assistant and Siri tied at 36%, followed by Alexa.
Source: Microsoft (2019)
There are other surveys that suggest Google Assistant’s usage is greater than Siri’s.

58% use voice to find local business information

The connection between mobile and local search is direct. While Google has in the past said that 30% of mobile searches are related to location, there are plenty of indications that the figure is actually higher. Google itself said the number was “a third” of search queries in September, 2010 (Eric Schmidt), 40% in May, 2011 (Marissa Mayer) and, possibly, 46% in October 2018.
Asking for driving directions is not always an indication of a commercial intent to go somewhere and buy something. But as the Adobe and Microsoft surveys indicate, it’s a primary virtual assistant/voice search use case. A voice search survey conducted in 2018 by BrightLocal also found:
  • 58% of U.S. consumers had done a local business search by voice on a smartphone
  • 74% of voice search users (the 58%) use voice to search for local businesses at least weekly
  • 76% of voice search users search on smart speakers for local businesses at least once a week, with the majority doing so daily

79% concerned about privacy with smart speakers

Multiple surveys indicate high satisfaction levels with voice search and virtual assistants. But, as with other digital media experiences, there are growing privacy concerns that may materially impact the development of the market.
A 2019 survey by Path Interactive found that “79% of survey respondents are at least somewhat concerned about the privacy implications of using voice search devices. Only 17% are not concerned.” That’s consistent with a 2018 survey of 1,000 U.S. adults by PriceWaterhouseCoopers, which found that 66% of those who hadn’t bought a smart speaker/display said they were concerned about privacy or data security.
Edison Research also found that concerns about hacking, government eavesdropping and that the devices were “always listening” was impacting smart speaker demand and potential future growth.

Conclusion: Hooked on voice

Even though voice search and voice commands are not utilized by everyone, what might be called the “voice habit” is already established. That doesn’t solve the smart speaker business model problem or suggest that these devices will ultimately fulfill their promise. But consumers will increasingly use voice to control their smartphones, connected devices in their homes and functions in their cars. That’s because the technology is already good and it’s only getting better. Marketers should be paying attention to how their listings render across these devices when voice is the search activator.

How to Inflate Any Ball Without a Pump or Needle

Inflate Any Ball Without a Pump or Needle

What happens when you find your ball deflated and there's no pump or needle in sight? You could always cancel your plans of kicking around the soccer ball or starting that pickup football game in the park. Better yet, you could be terribly clever and find another way to get air into the ball. From a pen to a balloon to a gas station, there are ways to inflate it.

While balls all have an ideal pounds per square inch or psi (a term we all learned during "Deflategate"), at this time, all we care about is getting some air into our balls to increase the air pressure. For future reference, however, the target psi is 7.5 to 8.5 for a basketball, 8.7 for a soccer ball, 4.26 to 4.61 for a volleyball, and 12.5 and 13.5 for a regular pigskin football. Exercise balls range in size, so it's impossible to give you a target psi for them.
But we don't need to be so precise at this time though. Any air will do!

Use Compressed Air to Pump Up Your Ball

If you haven't already wasted your entire supply blasting your friends in the face with freezing cold compressed air, you could use this standard office item to fill up a deflated ball. The most difficult part about inflating a ball without a pump or needle is finding something that will fit inside the small air hole. Well, with a compressed air canister, you have the perfect solution.
The small straw that comes with the canned air will fit inside the ball's hole perfectly. I'd suggest doing small bursts of air since the can will chill up rather quickly. This probably won't work if the ball is completely flat, and it would be pretty expensive to keep using this trick, so make sure it's just a one-time thing.

Method #2Transfer Air from a Balloon into Your Flat Ball

Another repurpose idea is to use air from a balloon. As long as you have something to pass the air between the two, you've got an instant DIY solution. If you have a pump that's broken, the needle will still work. If you don't have one, though, you can use a very thin straw or ... a coffee stirrer. As for the balloon, the bigger and stronger the better. A punch balloon would work very well.
Blow up the balloon as much as possible. Then, using a paper clip or clamp, close off the balloon's lip to keep the air inside. Next, attach the pump needle or straw/stirrer to the balloon and insert the other end into the ball's hole. Release the paper clip or clamp, and the air will begin to transfer into the ball. You can squeeze the balloon to make the air transfer faster.
Images by Nextraker/YouTube

We ourselves have not tested this trick out. Commenters on the video have questioned the validity of this hack, noting that the balloon doesn't appear to be getting any smaller, though the ball is filling up very well, as you can see below. So if you test this one out, let us know if it worked or not.

Method #3Fashion a Pen's Ink Tube as a Makeshift Needle

As said, one of the biggest challenges, if you're missing a pump needle, is to find an adequate stand-in. Well, if you have a pen nearby, you've found one. For this hack, courtesy of Wendel F., you'll also need a paper clip, scissors, and tape.

Visit a Gas Station to Refill Your Ball

I've had my fair share of flat tires, and as a lesson learned, I now make sure to always have a few quarters in my car for such emergencies. Many gas stations have air pumps that you can use to fill up your deflating tires. But, if you have a pump needle or straw/stirrer with you, you can also use these powerful pumps to inflate your ball... or rather balls.
You can try and fill as many as you can before your time runs out. Note: In California, since 1999, gas stations have been required by law to provide free "water, compressed air, and a gauge for measuring air pressure" if you've purchased gasoline. So keep that in mind next time you're at the pump.

Method #5Or Visit a Bike Shop Instead

Speaking of being out and about, you can also call into your local bike repair store or shop to see if they'd be willing to use a bike pump to inflate a ball or two for you. Assuming they're not busy, a local shop may be amenable to such a request. Of course, out of courtesy, you should consider buying something small in exchange for their kind accommodation. You can always use a reflector or decal, right?

ou Can Even Siphon Air from Car Tires

We've seen photos of this in action, so it's totally possible, and Instructables user Aleksi has a tutorial on it. While his guide was geared toward transferring air from car tires to bike tires, it's not totally plausible to do so since bike tires require more psi than car tires, but it's perfect for filling up a tiny ball a tad. Just buy an air hose, a couple Schrader chucks, and an inflating needle, and keep them handy.
Alex Zakkas also has a tutorial on this, too, with a slightly different design and few different parts that may actually work better for you.

Method #7Invest in an Infusion Ball for Anytime Inflation

Many major brands, such as Spalding, now have a line of balls with the air pump built right into them. To use this gadgety feature, simply pull out the rubber top to open the pump and then pump the device until the ball is the firmness you want it to be. It's as simple as that, as seen here in a 2001 ad:
Image by Brentford's Old TV Commercials & Stuff/YouTube

As you can see, there are a number of clever ways to get air (and air pressure) back into a ball. Don't be discouraged because your basketball, football, or soccer ball is flat. Sure, your pump is broken and you can't find the needle, but that's okay. Grab a pen or a straw and go into MacGyver mode. You'll be playing ball again in no time!

Alternative of shaving cream

If You've Run Out of Shaving Cream, Give These 10 Household Items a Try

Running out of any shower necessity is just a temporary annoyance, but it always seems worse when it's an empty can of shaving cream or gel. Sure, you could dry shave or use whatever liquid toiletry item is in hands reach, but if you want a truly smooth shave without irritation, you'll want to try one of the following alternatives. Some of them might even work better than your can of Barbasol or Skintimate.

Next time around, try signing up for a subscription like Dollar Shave Club to make sure you always have fresh razors and shaving cream around.

1Baby Oil

Baby oil (which is just pure mineral oil) allows you to see your skin better while you shave, reducing the chances of nicks, cuts, razor bumps, and other skin irritations. Additionally, its slick nature helps razors work smoothly. Just make sure to use only a few drops. If you overdo it, your razor might get all gunked up.
You can also rely on other types of oils in a pinch. Coconut oil, olive oil, and even varieties like avocado oil all make shaving simple, smooth, and pain-free. As an added skin bonus, oils make for fantastic moisturizers that keep your skin soft after use, and can even help treat skin problems like psoriasis.

2Hair Conditioner

If you're in the shower without shaving cream, hair conditioner is the next best thing. Hair conditioner is rich in skin-beneficial ingredients and designed to hydrate, so helps provide a slick surface on your skin, and softens your hairs. It works just as well as shaving cream and can leave your skin feeling softer than usual.
Image via Trusper
Don't use conditioner? Your shampoo is a perfectly good solution, too, and works particularly well when shaving your beard. Shampoo creates a great lather, cleanses the skin and facial hair, and makes shaving simple.

3Shea Butter

You may rely on shea butter as your after-shower or post-shave moisturizer, but it can help you get a smooth shave as well. Shea butter used in place of shaving cream makes the blades of a razor remove hair more smoothly, allowing for a very close shave. As an added bonus, you won't have to apply any lotion when you're finished.

4Regular Old Soap

Everyone has soap on hand at home (right?), so go ahead and grab a bar when you need to shave. It'll get the job done, just without any smooth or moisturizing benefits. Just make sure to lather up the bar to create a sudsy surface on your skin, or you could end up with some painful razor burn afterward, and a clogged up razor blade.

5Raw Honey

Happen to have raw honey stocked in your kitchen? Break it out and bring it into the bathroom, as it's an excellent moisturizer and shaving aid. Although it's messy to apply and sticky wherever it falls, it offers the slick protection you need when you take your razor to your skin. If the honey is too thick or too sticky add a little water to make it a great shaving cream replacement. Make sure to rinse your blade off good before storing, though!

6Peanut Butter

This sandwich filler is thick and creamy, which makes it the perfect item to slather on your skin as you shave. It will be messy and requires an awful lot of razor cleansing during the process, but the results may make it worthwhile. Once it's washed off, the peanut butter leaves behind soft, hydrated skin. Just make sure you don't use the chunky kind.
Image by Laura Fitzpatrick, Jess Austin, & Samuel Mitchell/The Tab
If you don't keep peanut butter handy, feel free to grab any other nut butter, such as almond butter. These nut-based "creams" all help to moisturize, and prevent razor burn thanks to their smooth texture.

7Aloe Vera

Aloe vera can soothe the pain of sunburns, and it's also a great way to prevent and treat razor burn. It creates a consistency identical to that of common shaving gels and causes little mess and no damage to your razor. Should you somehow end up with razor burn anyway, the cooling feature of aloe vera will keep you from itching and scratching! You could either use it straight from the plant, or just use store-bought gel.

8Body Lotion

Body lotion doesn't have to stay outside the shower — like hair conditioner, shea butter, and other known skin moisturizers, the lotion you typically apply after shaving can double as shaving cream when needed. It's an ideal consistency and offers a smooth barrier between razor blade and skin.
Image via Makeupandbeauty
However, be careful when you apply lotion before shaving. If you rub the lotion into your skin too effectively, your body will soak it up and you'll end up shaving nearly dry.

9Dishwashing Soap

Finally, there's one more soap that can help you get a pain-free shave when you're desperate for a substitute: dishwashing soap. Bring your kitchen soap into the bathroom, and you'll find that dish soap lathers well, allowing you a thinner version of foamy shaving cream. It isn't as good at preventing irritation as other options, but it can do the job if you're desperate for a hair-free day.

10Mix & Match

Sometimes, the best shaving cream alternative will be a combination of different ingredients. For instance, this guy swears by his homemade aloe vera and coconut oil shaving gel. So feel free to mix and match and of the ingredients above to find your perfect recipe.

How to remove scratches and scuff marks on car at Home

Remove Scratches & Scuff Marks in Your Car's Paint Job with Toothpaste

Whether you drive a new or used car, discovering a new dent, scratch, or scuff mark can send you into a frustration spiral. While there are many DIY ways to deal with dents, scratches and scuff marks are trickier because using the wrong stuff could make your car's paint job look even worse.

Use Toothpaste to Remove Scratches & Scuffs

Just grab a damp, soft cloth and a smear of toothpaste, and you can erase scratches and scuff marks on your car without much work involved. This trick works best if the scratches and scuff marks haven't fully penetrated the clear coat of your vehicle's paint. If you can grab hold of a scratch with your fingernail, it might be too big to buff out with toothpaste.
Toothpaste works to sand down the uneven surface of your car's glossy sheen and fills in the gap. Just make sure the surface around the area is clean—you don't want to buff particles of dirt and debris into your paint. If there is foreign paint on the outside, the toothpaste will act as an abrasive to help remove that, too.
Image via Birmingham Car Body Repair
Add a dab of toothpaste to your damp cloth. Rub the toothpaste onto the scratch or scuff mark using small circular motions to cover its surface. As you move or lift the cloth, you should see the scratch or scuff mark disappear. When you see that the mark is gone, you're finished!
Image via wikiHow

Mike Shoesmith demonstrates the technique for scuff marks in the video below. If you'd like to speed up this process, as he demonstrates, you can use a buffing attachment on your drill.

Why Toothpaste Works

The scratch-removing magic of toothpaste works on your car's surface and a variety of other delicate items. Known to remove the scratches on CD and DVD discs, and potentially marks on the screens of your phone and tablet, it can be a smoothing wonder. But what makes it so effective?
Image via Tested

According to Ryan Dube of MakeUseOf, toothpaste is a sanding tool. It's like a lighter, softer form of sandpaper. As you gently rub toothpaste onto a slick surface, it "catches" on any imperfections that exist and softly sands them away, wearing away the uneven surface problems and polishing the surface clean.
Although we don't think of our toothpaste as doing any sanding on our teeth, it's essentially performing this same task every time we brush. After all, how else would it remove the leftover pieces of last night's dinner and polish our teeth?

Picking the Right Paste

However, buffing out scratches and scuffs with any old toothpaste won't cut it. NC Consumer, along with other sources online, says that whitening toothpaste is best.
Whitening toothpaste works because of its rougher, grittier texture. Though you might not feel a difference in your brushing routine, it makes a significant difference when used on your car's paint. Whitening toothpaste contains small, barely discernible abrasives, ones that similar to the abrasives found in car polish. As you gently rub the toothpaste against your car, the abrasive action removes tiny layers of film and clear coat, polishing away those ugly marks and leaving a glistening mirror shine.
If you're worried about using the wrong toothpaste or want to buff up your entire car (that'd be a lot of toothpaste), you could opt for some clay bars or a detailing kit, which do a great job getting your paint job as smooth as glass.

What Else Is Toothpaste Good For?

Once you've selected the perfect abrasive toothpaste, there's a lot you can fix with it. You can eliminate scuff marks on your shoes, turn your car's headlights clear again, and even get rid of those stubborn water rings on beat up furniture. And, of course, you can brush your teeth with it. Whichever way you use your toothpaste, remember it's a wonderful sanding tool in a pinch.

What to do if your Phone hang with solutions

Phone Hang Solution: Tips for Solving Screen Freeze Problems

Learn the tips for solving phone hanging problem. We are explaining the reasons that cause screen freeze. We will also suggest a few solutions that you can try to get rid of phone hang issues.

“Why my phone hangs so often?”, this is the lament of millions of people all around the world. Gone are the days of simple mobile phones like the famous Nokia 1100. Nowadays, mobile phones have become smartphones. These devices run on complex software (like Android, iOS, Windows etc.) which require much higher hardware capacity. Moreover, millions of apps are out there which vary in performance, quality and resource utilization. Phone hanging refers to the state when a mobile phone will stop responding to the commands of user. It is also called phone crash and is characterized by screen freeze. When hung, no matter what you do, your phone will refuse to do anything.
In this article we will learn about the reasons behind phone hang and possible solutions of this omnipresent problem. Occasional phone hanging should not be a cause of worry, but if it happens often, then you should try the tips given below.

1. Reduce the Number of Concurrent Apps to Stop Phone Hang

Each mobile phone comes has a limited amount of resources like memory (RAM) and processing power. If you overburden the phone beyond the capacity of these resources, the phone may hang. So, you should try and minimize the number of concurrently running apps. There are a number of apps that run in the background. You can free the clogged memory by stopping the apps that you don’t need at present.
To see the list of currently running apps, go to Settings > Apps > Running App.

2. Keep All the Apps Updated

Keep visiting the app stores like Google Play (if you have Android phone) and iTunes App Store (if you’ve an iPhone). Mobile app developers keep on improving performance of their apps. Therefore it is highly recommended that you regularly update all the apps as and when a better version is available. Latest versions of apps may be designed to use lesser memory and CPU power.

3. Shut Down Your Mobile Phone

Shutting down your phone every once in a while is a good idea because it will completely refresh the memory of phone. When you will restart your phone, its memory will be free of all the unnecessary pieces of data that were lingering on and occupying the memory space.

4. Switch off and Remove Battery

This tip may not have any big effect at all in most cases. But it is also a good idea to remove battery and SIM card after every few months. Removing battery and SIM will clean the dust from the electric touch points.
It is fine to remove mobile battery once in a while. It remove the dust at touch points. It may help in solving phone hang problem.
It is fine to remove mobile battery once in a while. It remove the dust at touch points. It may help in solving phone hang problem.

5. Install Apps in External Memory (SD Card)

Most of the mobile phone users install all sorts of apps in their phones. When installing the apps, they don’t pay much attention to where the app is going to be installed and what impact it can have on the performance of the phone. In most cases, by default, the apps get installed in the internal memory of the phone. This leaves lesser space for the running the apps and that in turn causes clogged memory. If your phone hangs, it is advisable to install apps in the external memory (i.e. SD Card) of the phone. Usually the external memory is larger than the internal memory. And external memory can also be easily expanded if required (instead of 2 GB card, just insert an 8 GB card!). Therefore, in external memory more apps can be easily installed without clogging the internal memory of the phone. This will save your phone from hanging.
For this you can set the default write disk. Go to Settings > Storage > Default write disk > Select SD Card. Please note that this setting is available in slightly different location in different mobile handsets. So, you may have to do a bit of look around.

6. Move Installed Apps from Internal to External Memory

You can always move the already installed apps from internal to external memory. As explained above, this will give more internal memory space for the smooth running of the apps. As a result your phone will not hang.
Setting for moving installed apps is usually available under Settings > Apps.
