The third season of fantasy drama ‘American God’ premiered on Starz in Jan and ended on a cliffhanger. While the fans around the world were assured that the show will return for a new season, they were left devastated when news broke that the show had been canceled after three seasons.

The announcement came as a big shock for the fans and they are still hopeful for the show’s return. It’s yet not all over for American Gods as Neil Gaiman has assured fans that the TV adaptation is “definitely not dead” but only looking for a new home. Of you are unaware, Neil Gaiman is the author of the novel on which the series is based.

Till season 1, American Gods was one of the top shows on Starz. However, it went through a lot of drama behind the scenes which resulted in controversies and subsequently the cancellation.

Why was American Gods Season season 4 cancelled?

It’s been a bumpy ride for American Gods as far as production and behind-the-scenes equations are concerned. The first season premiered in 2017 received a tremendous response and in May 2017 the series was renewed for a second season.

The trouble started when original showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green were fired after clashing with production company Fremantle over the show’s budget. Jesse Alexander replaced the duo as showrunner but things failed to get back on track. The second season was hit hard and got delayed as issues arose between Fremantle and US broadcaster Starz over rising budget and last-minute rewrites.

The second season had a delayed release in 2019. It opened to poor reviews, with many critics feeling the quality of the show had downgraded. The show attracted more controversy when the story shifted focus to Shadow Moon’s time living in Lakeside. This resulted in the loss of some cast members.

For the third season, Charles H Eglee replaced Jesse Alexander as a showrunner. The series got back on track and the third season premiered in Jan 2021. It garnered good reviews from critics and the viewers also showered applause.

However, the damage was already done. With a continuous downfall in viewership and all the controversies that happened, Starz was left with no option but to close the series adruptly.
